Although we have nearly 2,000 laws, we put emphasis on six legal codes: Constitution, Civil Code, Commercial Code, Penal Code, Code of Civil Procedure and Code of Criminal Procedure.
Before checking Japanese Law Translation Database System (http://www.japaneselawtranslation.go.jp/), I thought they must have been six ‘laws’ not six ‘codes’.
According to this website(https://dictionary.law.com/), ‘code’ is ‘a collection of written laws gathered together, usually covering specific subject matter’. While ‘law’ is ‘any system of regulations to govern the conduct of the people of a community, society or nation, in response to the need for regularity, consistency and justice based upon collective human experience’.
Certified Administrative Procedures Legal Specialist Act regulates certified administrative procedures legal specialist’s business, and this is an ‘act’ not a ‘code’.
According to the above-mentioned website, ‘act’ is ‘a statutory plan passed by Congress or any legislature which is a “bill” until enacted and becomes law’.
Law, code and act… I think I have to carefully choose these words.
